How do you grab the attention at a do at which the likes of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are the guests, while you are yet to make a debut in Hollywood?
Well, Mallika is not the only one who owes her overnight fame to an outrageous dress. Jennifer Lopez wore a green-barely-there or anywhere dress and became a diva. And who knew Liz Hurley before she wore a black dress, which was at the mercy of the giant safety-pins that held the dress together, to the premier of Four Weddings And A Funeral. Both the women in question became Hollywood A-listers from almost nobodies. Looks like Mallika was following the same strategy.
Though designer Nikhil Mehra thought that the dress was “gothic”, he believes it was “totally unsexy.” Says Nikhil, “The dress was pretty much all wrong. The gothic is supposed to be sexy but this was totally unsexy. There are two kinds of people — trendsetters like Nicole Kidman and then those who live in their own world of opportunities, like our Mallika Sherawat.”

Mallika Sherawat knows it all. She managed to grab eyeballs at the LA premiere of Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, thanks to the revealing black number that she wore. The attention that she got was stupendous, but the icing on the cake, at least for Sherawat, was headlines like ‘Mallika Sherawat upstages Angelina Jolie’. So what, if most people — especially the fashion frat — didn’t exactly take a shine to the outfit.

Designer Rina Dhaka was “aghast” to see Mallika in that dress. She says, “The picture is shocking enough to wake me up from my afternoon sleep. It’s okay till the waist, but those stirrups make it scary. I feel like putting a witch’s hat on her head and casting her in one of those fairy tale movies that need a bad witch.”
As for designer Rocky S, well, he just falls short of words for the dress and asks, “What is it? She was trying to make a point in that funny dress, but what is it?” Adds Rocky, “There are many people who have pulled stunts like what Mallika did. JLo’s green dress was outrageous, but she looked great, but when Cher wore a spiderweb dress, that was such a faux pas.”
