Research, Really?

Research, Really?

There are a gazillion researches done by universities and organisations, spending millions, that’ find’ useless results we already know!

A new research says beauty is officially skin deep. According to scientists, women with a more even and radiant skin tone are the ones people find beautiful, suggesting that an even skin tone is more important than symmetry of a face. Scientists say this could help explain the continuing success of older actresses like Halle Berry, 43, and Cate Blanchett, 40, both renowned for having “good skin in close-ups”.
Another new research has ‘discovered’ that men are much quicker to say ‘I love you’ to their partners than women. The study also found that the over-55s are the most active and experimental in the dating arena. Well, they’d have to be, considering how soon they’ll be over the fence.
Scientific research also ‘establishes’ that having an attractive partner by your side makes you more attractive to the opposite sex, but if you are with a more attractive person of the same sex, you look uglier by contrast. Nicolas
Sarkozy didn’t need that kind of dedicated research when he lined 20 short men behind him while facing the cameras at a press conference!
Stating the obvious
How often do you look at some expensive, thoroughly conductedover-months research every second day, and think, ‘That didn’t need research, that’s plain common sense!’ Ruchika Juneja, who works with an insurance company, says, “These studies are silly.” Renu Vats, a student shares, “A study I read on the net says that tall men are more attractive. Wow, like you’d never guess that.”
Sanjay Malik, a consultant, says sarcastically, “I was highly amused by a research that said ‘Men lose their minds when they talk to beautiful women’. What a revelation!” Gaurav Dutta, an IT professional, says he remembers this research clearly that stated, “‘Venting anger against your company or boss on social networking websites might ruin your career.’ I particularly remember this one because only a stupid person would do that. You
don’t need research to tell you that. These people should come to me instead of doing research on such things; I’ll charge half the money that goes into research!”
Not so sill y
Though some of these researches reiterate the obvious, yet some readers appreciate them for different reasons. Says Krishna Bhardwaj, “My husband found a research on the net that said, ‘Women cry, nag and gossip more than men.’ Now, whenever I fight with him, he says, ‘You're allowed to do that,’ and he shows me a printout of the research that he’s pasted on his desk! And when he complains that I’m on phone all the time, I point towards that research and we both laugh.”
Amanda Sohal, who works with an MNC, says that there are two studies in particular whose links she has put on her status message, “One says that surfing the net during work hours enhances productivity, and the other, my favourite, says that a four-day work week enhances output. I want my boss to read it!”

Let me first congratulate you on picking up a very different topic for blog. Much appreciated !!

Essentially research is driven by and large to supplement / influence decision making or to buy a certain product. Neither it is a final verdict nor the last opinion on planet. Give or take, its 10% in the overall decision making.

That said, research is also a part of Perception Management where in you try and alter the thought process of consumer repeatedly projecting claims which may or may not be true. Take for example: Colgate paste ad that claims "Research has shown.. blah blah...." That is hardly true as you really don't need paste for cleaner teeth.

Another case in point is, a research that claims drinking wine /beer is good for health which is hardly true.

Ultimately, its not necessary that research is the final verdict. If much common sense is applied, things are obvious and really no research is needed.

Kudos once again for marvellous piece and keep penning more!!

Regards,
